Following the appointment of Dr. Arienti as Director of Internal Medicine A at the Ospedale Maggiore of Bologna, in September 1998 the Ultrasound Centre was transferred to the Ospedale Maggiore.

The activities of the Centre were expanded to include angiology, leading to the Centre being renamed as theCentre for Research and Training in Internist, Interventional and Vascular Ultrasound with the annexation of three Ultrasound Schools: two recognised at national level by scientific societies (Italian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, SIUMB, and Italian Society of Internal Medicine, SIMI) and one under the Bologna NHS, for the training of its doctors and nurses.

A year at the Ultrasound School includes theory courses and practical sessions.
Since 2005, on behalf of SIMI, the Bologna School has also organised a yearly Ultrasound Summer School, for specialising students and SIMI members. The Ultrasound School is attended by specialising internists from European countries as part of the “European Program of European Federations of Internal Medicine (EFIM)”.

The Italian Society of Internal Medicine entrusted Dr. V. Arienti with the responsibility for setting up a Study Group in Internist Ultrasound and the coordination of the training network of the SIMI Schools in Bedside Ultrasound.
The lecturers at the Bologna give lessons every year in the “University Master’s Course in Ultrasound" (Prof. F. Violi) at the University la Sapienza in Rome.
